Not only is numeracy a life skill, but an understanding of mathematics helps to develop skills in critical thinking and problem solving, which can be used throughout your academic studies and your future career.

Here you can explore the live workshops the Centre for Academic Success has to offer over the next couple of weeks on the theme of Mathematics.

Tuesday 12th November 2024

Partial Fractions

Adding rational expressions and simplifying is relatively easy. However, going the other way round, expressing a single rational function as the sum of two or more simpler ones is much more difficult. This workshop teaches us how to handle partial fractions and denominators with repeated quadratic factors.

Solving Quadratic Equations

A quadratic equation is a polynomial equation of degree 2. The ''U'' shaped graph of a quadratic is called a parabola. A quadratic equation has two solutions. Either two distinct real solutions, one double real solution or two imaginary solutions. There are several methods we can use to solve a quadratic equation explored in this workshop.

Mathematical Expressions

Mathematical expressions are numbers, operators and symbols grouped to 'express' or 'show' a value. Once you understand manipulating expressions principles, you can factorise and simplify expressions. This workshop explores collecting like terms, expanding brackets, factorizing quadratic expressions and dealing with algebraic fractions.

Logarithms and exponentials

A knowledge of indices is essential for an understanding of most algebraic processes. In this workshop, we will learn about powers and rules for manipulating them. Furthermore, we will explore logarithms and exponentials.
