2.1
The programme(s): The academic programme(s) delivered by the JEI, leading to the SU award of BEng and the Nanjing Tech award of Bachelor of Engineering.
2.2
Core module(s): The modules identified as constituting the core academic knowledge for both the Swansea and Nanjing Tech programmes.
2.3
Nanjing Tech degree only required modules: the modules that are required by the Chinese Ministry of Education and which count towards the Nanjing Tech award but not the SU award.
2.4
Graduate Thesis Project: The independent learning module carried out in the final year.
2.5
Credit: A measure of load that is related to the contact hours in both the Chinese and UK system. In these regulations, the SU credits will be used throughout in reference to the core modules in the programme. Students will need to complete modules equivalent to 120 SU credits to successfully complete each year of study. The Nanjing Tech degree only required modules will not be given SU credit equivalence.
2.6
Take: Registration on a module (for example, first take would be the first time a student has registered on a module).
2.7
Attempt: The registration of an effort to undertake the assessment in a module, for example, first attempt, resit/second attempt.
2.8
First sit: Where a student may attempt the module again in its entirety due to approved extenuating circumstances, including attending lectures and seminars. Marks for first sits are not capped. Essentially a retake of the module without registering an attempt.
2.9
Resit: Where a student may attempt the assessment for a failed module again, at the next available opportunity, during the prescribed supplementary period, without attending lectures and seminars again. There is no additional charge to resit a module. Resit assessments will be weighted in accordance with the associated module proforma. Exceptions to resits with a mark cap are set out in Regulation 2.12.
2.10
Retake of module: Where a student fails to pass a module at the resit attempt (due to academic failure or absence), if eligible the student must retake the failed module(s) at the next opportunity in addition to their syllabus of modules for the next year of study. Retakes of modules in the next academic year are considered to be ‘trailed’, to allow students to continue into the next level of the programme while they complete the retake. Retake of a module includes attending lectures and seminars and attempting all associated assessment for the module. In the event of a timetabling conflict between a ‘retake’ module and a ‘first take’ module, the first take module takes precedence.
When a decision has been made to allow 'repeat failed modules' only, students will be timetabled solely for the modules they are retaking. They will not be required to undertake any study for modules at the next level of study but will be expected to retake all failed modules for that level. The overall module mark for a retake module will not be capped at levels 3 and 4 with regards to the SU award. All resits and retakes will be capped for the NJTU award and at levels 5 and 6 for the SU award.
Students will be charged on a pro-rata basis for the retake of modules, unless there are approved extenuating circumstances.
2.11
Repeat level: Where a student fails to meet the requirements to progress to the next year of study they may be given a decision of ‘repeat failed modules’ during the following academic year, including attending lectures and seminars for these modules. Alternatively, students can request to Repeat Level allowing them to repeat all modules in the syllabus. Marks for Repeat Level are not capped. Any previous credit attained for the year must be forfeited and cannot be ‘carried forward’ to count towards the retake year. Where students retake the year, they are expected to incur the cost of an additional year of tuition fees. Students are permitted one opportunity to retake a year within the programme, provided that this does not exceed the permitted period of candidature.
2.12
Capped marks: the module mark for a resit or retake attempt is ‘capped’ at the minimum pass marks (40% SU and 60% Nanjing Tech) for levels 5 and 6 (years 3 and 4) for modules contributing to the SU award. Resit marks for modules contributing to the Nanjing Tech award will be capped at all levels.
2.13
Matriculation/Registration: the formal admission of a candidate to the programme leading to an award from SU and Nanjing Tech. ‘Matriculation’ is the term used by SU and ‘registration’ is the term used by Nanjing Tech.
2.14
Accumulate or Attain: to gain credit (pass modules).
2.15
Certificate of completion (Jieye Zhengshu): Students who completed the prescribed modules but fail to meet the Nanjing Tech graduation requirements are permitted to conclude their studies and receive a certificate of completion. If they later meet the graduation requirements, they are eligible to receive a Nanjing Tech graduation certificate.
2.16
Graduation certificate (Biye Zhengshu): A student who has completed all prescribed curriculum requirements within the designated study period, achieved passing grades, and satisfied the university's graduation standards shall, upon application and subsequent university review and approval, be awarded graduation and issued a graduation certificate by Nanjing Tech University.
2.17
Certificate of attendance (Yiye Zhengshu)/Realistic study certificate: Students who withdraw after completing at least one academic year of study shall receive either a Certificate of Attendance or realistic study certificate. Students receiving Certificate of Attendance are not permitted to re-enroll, nor shall their certificates be subsequently converted to graduation certificate. Nanjing Tech University may issue a realistic study certificate to students dismissed for misconduct..
2.18
Nanjing Tech Graduation requirements: Students are required to submit their graduation applications before the eighth week of the first semester of their final academic year. Students must complete the required courses, achieve satisfactory grades and fulfil graduation criteria to be eligible to graduate with the undergraduate degree. Graduation criteria includes compliance with national and Nanjing Tech regulations for the award of bachelor’s degrees. Students with disciplinary actions which have not been removed will not meet the graduation requirements.
